Novelty
Media, why use it?
The Oxford English Dictionary defines the word "novelty"
as "amusingly striking or unusual". Why
not create a stir by using novelty
media, something that is genuinely different,
something that will open dialogue with a potential
client whilst still getting your multi-media message
across?
Currently we have 6 different kinds of novelty CD
shown below:
Business
Card CD
> about the size of a standard business card
> can store up to about 50MB of data (enough
for most presentations)
> generally used as a sales tool
> used by sales staff as a "leave behind".
8cm
CDs
> mini CD with 80mm diameter
> storage capacity of 180MB
> can be produced in any volume
> excellent promotional tool creating interest
whenever received
> retain credibility as a professional medium
ABCD
> printable dimensions of a standard 12cm CD
> has the capacity of an 8cm CD
> clever label design can give the impression
of a shaped CD.
> mainly used as a promotional disc
> ideal for Direct Mail campaigns
Coloured
Media
> same size and capacity as a standard CD (about
700MB)
> manufactured using coloured polycarbonate
> can be supplied in a variety of different colours
> used for promotional purposes and easy product
identification
Retro
Discs
> standard CD designed to look like a vinyl record
with grooves
> same capacity and dimensions as standard CD
> targeted at the audio market
> mainly used for promotional purposes
> CANNOT be used on a turntable!
Sniffle
Disc
> standard 12cm CD with a specially scented coating
> over 70 different scents available
> a promotional disc used where a scent can enhance
the product
Novelty media is generally used to create an impression
and act as a talking point with potential clients,
and since they work in the same way as standard
CDs, have the added advantage of helping to drive
your message home.
When deciding to use a novelty CD it is important
to carefully select the media, defining its purpose
and who the target market is. For example, if exhibiting
at a trade show and a multi-media presentation forms
the basis of your promotional message, a business
card CD is ideal. Alternatively your promotion
might be for items that have a modern spin on an
old product, such as a retro style DAB radio - aimed
at the consumer, a Retro
CD might be the ideal medium.
Like all promotional activity, when considering
using novelty media, it is critical that the target
market is understood, what impression you are trying
to create and the advantages / limitations with
that media. But, when used correctly, and to the
correct market with a good message, novelty media
has proven to be very effective.
And interestingly, people just can’t bring
themselves to throw them away!!
